Neon Star

A long exposure photograph of a neon sign. The sign reads "Star Motel", in the upper right corner the letters "TV" appear in a circle. At the bottom more neon lights read "No Vacancy". Floating above the main portion of the sign a neon lit star hangs in the darkness. The structure that attaches the star to the rest of the sign can just barely be seen. The sign is isolated in the darkness with some desert shrubs illuminated by the neon in the foreground.

About:

This is the most exhibited photograph in this series. It's been shown at Art Intersection in Arizona, at the Crocker Museum as part of their annual art action, and will be in an exhibit in Glasgow, Scotland at the end of this year.

I think the thing that viewers find fascinating about it, is that it seems dislocated from its usual environment. There is mystery around the illuminated desert shrubs. What is this sign doing in the middle of nowhere? How does it still have power?

I'll ruin the illusion for you, actually if you don't want it ruined stop reading now. This sign was installed in the desert by a person who buys old signs and sets them back up on their property in Joshua Tree. There are several others on the property and even another one in this exhibit. I am in no way affiliated with this person, but if you want to see it for yourself you can book this place as a vacation rental. Just look up Bungalow in the Boulders.
